Items from the textile collections
have been used to inspire and instruct past and present students
and they served as inspiration for the recent ‘Archive,
Artifice, Artifact’ exhibition - the fourth exchange of
ideas in contemporary design and thinking bringing together
work by Glasgow School of Art staff and contemporary professional
textile designers. Other users include postgraduate students
and textile historians. Collections include:
- Records and c300 textile items of the Needlework development
scheme of which c20 were produced in Scotland, 17th century-1961
- Kath Whyte (1909-1996) Head of Embroidery & Weaving
at the School from 1948 to 1974; material includes lecture
notes, sketchbooks and examples of textiles, 1922-1988
- Examples of Ayrshire Whitework including three nineteenth
century christening robes
- Embroidery & Woven Textile Collection consisting
chiefly of lace work
- Glasgow Style Textile Collection consisting of works
by students and staff of the School including items by Jessie
Newbery and Ann Macbeth who were responsible for the establishment
and early development of the Department of Embroidery at
Glasgow School of Art, the first of its kind in Scotland,
19th century-
- 67 Jacquard sample books and 5 notebooks belonging to
the fabric manufacturer Donald Brothers Ltd, Dundee, 1922-1937
- Collection of 27 dolls dressed in period costumes, c1956
