The Service has major textile
collections reflecting the long-standing importance of the Borders
textile industry and its economic and social impact on the region’s
communities. The collections reflect the whole spectrum of the
production process from machinery to woven, knitted and printed
textiles and costume. The collections include:
- Hosiery and knitwear collection consisting of over 600
items relating to dyeing, spinning, machinery, garments,
product samples and Trade Union banners, photographs, documents,
samples, pattern books and garments
- Tweed and linen collection including pre-production and
producted items, machinery and photographs
- Ephemera from Hawick mills, including Pringle, Klein
and Ballantyne, and a small collection of Bernat Klein work
- Photograph album from 1900 showing every process of work
from dyeing to despatch in Philiphaugh and Forest Mills,
Selkirk
- 50 items of costume and accessories
- Records of Gibson & Lamgair’s St Mary's Mill
in Selkirk, 1894-
