Glossary Term: plaid

Glossary Definition: Derived from the Gaelic word for blanket, a length of woollen cloth used as part of the traditional Highland dress. Later used to describe woven fabric with a chequered pattern of coloured stripes or bars that crossed each other at right angles to form squares. Sometimes extended to include certain printed patterns and also tartan. Also used to denote a type of Paisley shawl produced in the mid 19th century.
