Glossary Term: jacquard

Glossary Definition: Term derives from the name of the French inventor who developed this particular type of loom, Joseph Marie Jacquard.
Jacquard machine: A mechanical device for selecting and raising the warp threads on the loom by means of a punched card system. First exhibited at the Industrial Exposition in Paris 1801 by Joseph Marie Jacquard, based on earlier inventions by Bouchon, Falcon and Vaucanson and derived from the drawloom.
Jacquard loom; A loom fitted with the jacquard apparatus for the weaving of figured fabrics.
Jacquard weave: Elaborate pattern woven into the cloth by a jacquard loom eg. tapestry weave, brocade, damask, brocatelle.
Jacquard harness: A series of cords and attachments suspended from the hooks of a jacquard machine, each attached to an eyelet through which one or more warp yarns are threaded.
